ISO: How many printers were in Cleveland, ca. 1950

From the contact form:

Hello, I am the sales/marketing director at HKM Direct Market Communications in Cleveland, Ohio, and one of the surviving commercial printers in our area. We are celebrating our 100th anniversary this year and will be doing parties and a media campaign. I have been digging but no luck trying to find out how many printers were in Cleveland by the decade beginning in 1950 until today. Also would like to have the same stats for the US. Can you help us?
Thank you!
Carla

Congratulations on being in business for 100 years. I would think that the Cleveland History Center would be able to help. They are likely to have city directories that would list local printers. https://www.wrhs.org/plan-your-visit/history-center/

The U.S. Department of Commerce should also be able to help with the national search. https://www.commerce.gov/

  2. Have you connected with the Cleveland Institute of Art? The Jessica Grund library may have research resources on the printers of Cleveland … or at least can direct your inquiry to other institutions. BTW, connecting with the art printers in your city is a great way to advertise your firm’s presence as well as a great community to dump your antiquated equipment or unused type.
