Chesapeake Chapter / Michael Denker Fellowships

Applications are due by December 15

The Chesapeake Chaper of the American Printing History Association is currently seeking undergraduate or graduate students with an interest in printing history, printing, or book arts to apply for the Chapter’s Michael Denker Fellowships. We are asking for your help in spreading the word, through any academic contacts you may have or by alerting any eligible students you may know.

The Chapter will provide a one-year membership to the American Printing History Association (APHA) and the opportunity to participate in a year of Chapter activities, lectures, exhibitions, and visits. Chapter events provide valuable opportunities to meet and interact with the many letterpress printers, bibliophiles, collectors, librarians, and other printing history experts who make up the Chesapeake Chapter.

Denker Fellows are asked to give a presentation on their interests, research, or coursework at an event in November 2017, at the Library of Congress. Each may also be asked for a short written contribution to promote the Fellowships.

Application is simple: send an email with a short statement of interest and background, along with complete contact information, and the name and email of a faculty contact at the applicant’s institution to George Barnum, President of the Chesapeake Chapter. You may also address any questions to George.

Our Chapter enjoys access to a variety of major libraries, museums, and private collections with important book and printing history holdings, such as the Library of Congress, the Folger Library, and the Smithsonian, among many others.

Michael P. Denker was an active and beloved past president of the Chesapeake Chapter and an enthusiastic and accomplished letterpress printer who died in 2013. The Denker Fellowship has been established to honor and celebrate Mike’s commitment to getting young people interested in printing and printing history and his great devotion to the Chesapeake Chapter.

Deadline to apply is December 15, 2017.
