New Printing History Guest Editor and Editorial Committee
Please join us in welcoming our new Printing History guest editor, Dr. Daniel Arbino. Daniel is the Head of Collection Development for the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection at the University of Texas at Austin. He obtained his PhD in Latin American literatures and cultures from the University of Minnesota in 2013 with an emphasis on the orphan trope in twentieth-century Caribbean literatures. Afterward, he taught at Centre College and Tulane University before shifting careers to librarianship, obtaining an MLIS in 2016 from the University of Arizona. Since beginning at the Benson Collection in 2017, Daniel has acquired rare and circulating materials related to U.S. Latino studies, the Andean region, and the Mesoamerica region. Daniel has maintained an active scholarly agenda with publications in notable peer-reviewed journals such as The Journal of Caribbean Literatures, Aztlán, Chiricú, eTropic, and Publication of the Afro-Latin/American Research Association. He also serves as the managing editor of the Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials’ conference proceedings.
At its April 2022 meeting, the APHA Board also approved the appointment of an Editorial Committee for Printing History, which will include the following three members:
Paul Shaw: A designer and design historian, Paul has researched and written about the history of graphic design with a focus on typography, lettering and calligraphy for three decades. His areas of interest have included W.A. Dwiggins, Morris Fuller Benton, blackletter, Helvetica and the signage of the New York City subway system, George Salter, Phil Grushkin, Frank Holme, Renaissance scribe Bartolomeo Sanvito, and sculptor Andrea Bregno. He is the author of Revival Type: Digital Typefaces Inspired by the Past (2017). Paul has a BA in American Studies from Reed College and both an MA and an MPhil in American History from Columbia University. He teaches the history of type at the School of Visual Arts, Parsons School of Design, and California Rare Book School. Paul has been a member of APHA since 1977 and has been active in its New York Chapter for many years.
Irene Tichenor: Author of No Art Without Craft: The Life of Theodore Low De Vinne, Printer (2005), Irene is a past president of the American Printing History Association, a past vice president of the Bibliographical Society of America, and a member of the Grolier Club. Irene has a PhD and an MLS from Columbia University, and she lives and works in New York City.
Samuel V. Lemley: Curator of Special Collections at Carnegie Mellon University, Sam is interested in 16th- and 17th-century literature and science, analytical and computational bibliography, Thomas Jefferson, and the history and bibliography of science and math. He has published in several academic journals, including Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America, Spenser Studies, The Library, Eighteenth-Century Studies, and Studies in Bibliography. Sam holds a PhD in English from the University of Virginia and an MLIS from the Palmer School in New York City.
