ISO: John A. Gray, c.19th Publisher

I am trying to find information pertaining to a John A. Gray who owned a publishing house in New York City in the mid to late 19th century. There is a lot of information on Gray’s company but very little on Gray himself. If you have any information regarding Gray’s biography I would greatly appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction. I look forward to your swift reply. Thank you.

  1. Hi – John A. Gray is my 2nd great grand uncle. He was born in Russia, the son of the Rev. John Gray and Christiana Morrison Gray. I have more and an anecdote on his publishing career. I had found a piece by Mark Twain stating that he had started there as an apprentice. I would be happy to share what I have on the Gray family. Betsy Scroggs Silver Spring, MD

    I’m curious if you have any information about John A. Gray’s work with a veterans’ newspaper called The Soldier’s Friend, from 1864-1867. That’s a source I’m working with for a dissertation.
