[Keepsake from APHA's first conference in 1976]

Above:: "The Fist." Keepsake from APHA's first conference in 1976.

Since 1976, the American Printing History Association has organized an annual conference on a selected theme in printing history. Previous conferences have been held throughout the United States.

As a volunteer organization, APHA attracts many dedicated people, including some very talented printers and artists. Some keepsakes from previous conferences and meetings are depicted here.

The American Printing History Association would like to take the opportunity to thank the many individuals --more than can be thanked here-- for their dedication to printing history and its enjoyment.

In The Beginning (1976): APHA's "The Fist".

APHA's first conference, "Typographic America: A Bicentennial Perspective," featured "The Fist" -- a first, a poem "[w]ritten after acquiring a case of dingbats, ad libs, etceteras, & flowers, among which were some fifty fists" and printed in three colors by the Raintree Press, Bloomington, Indiana. (Thanks to Cathy Brody, who found the keepsake, and Theo Rehak for forwarding.)

"APHA at 25" (2000)

APHA 2000 Conference keepsake

Dennis Y. Ichiyama and Drew T. Clemens produced "APHA 25" for the 2000 conference at Rochester Institute of Technology. Printed with woodtypes at the Hamilton Wood Type Museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, each conference participant received a copy.

Additional information about the keepsake as well as higher resolution images are available online.
