What's New

The American Printing History Association has the following scholarly, educational and charitable objectives:

1) To encourage the study of printing history, especially American printing history, in all its facets from a world context to national, regional, state and local interests, and including all the arts and technologies relevant to printing, book arts and letter forms;
2) To produce and promote publications, exhibitions, conferences, lectures and other functions, at both national and local levels, by which information and ideas relating to printing history may be exchanged;
3) To foster the development and maintenance of libraries and museums for the preservation of materials bearing on printing history, including specimens of printing and the equipment and materials used in printing; and
4) To cooperate with other organizations, institutions and individuals to recognize the central importance of printing to humanity.

APHA's Officers and Contacts has our address (including e-mail) and lists our current officers. APHA is 501(c)(3) organization. Donations are tax deductible as charitable contributions to the extent provided by law. 

APHA members in good standing receive its scholarly journal Printing History, the APHA Newsletter, discounts on publications and invitations to the Association's annual conference and meeting. APHA's regional chapters sponsor lectures, field trips and other opportunities to meet fellow members on an informal basis. APHA's Publications

  • Printing History, the scholarly publication of the American Printing History Association, is published twice a year and is available only through membership in APHA  (join APHA). For more then 20 years, Printing History has joined scholarship with beautiful printing. Online are some sample articles, contents of recent issues, back issues information and an index for issue numbers 1-30.

  • The APHA Newsletter has stimulating articles, news and reviews. Members in good standing receive the APHA Newsletter in the mail and recent issues can be downloaded as Adobe Acrobat files.

  • Special Publications from APHA are sought after by libraries and collectors of fine printing about printing history and the book arts. Some sample pages from our current publications are online.

APHA Events and Activities

  • APHA Events Calendar has APHA national or regional activities.

  • APHA's Regional Chapters sponsor meetings, field trips, lectures and other programs. Get in touch with the regional chapters or check their individual events pages.

  • APHA's Annual Conference is held in a different city in the United States. See the latest news or learn about our previous conferences.

  • Oral History Project is an effort to preserve the experiences and skills of printers, illustrators, designers, and members of allied trades. The interviews are being deposited at Columbia University to ensure their long-term availability to future researchers and printers.

APHA Honors

  • APHA's Annual Awards honor those people and groups for their contributions to printing and the book arts. As one of the oldest associations dedicated to the study and appreciation of printing history, APHA has used its name to bring attention to hard-working individuals and organizations. 

  • Lieberman Memorial Lecture
    Each year a distinguished figure in printing or the book arts delivers APHA's Lieberman Lecture.

  • APHA Fellowship
    Beginning in 2003, APHA will award a fellowship for the study of printing history.

  • APHA Officers and Contacts has our address and list of current officers.

  • Related Sites has selected sites related to APHA's interest in printing history and the book arts.

  • Printing History selected articles online

  • Speeches online, containing the texts of award acceptance speeches given at APHA's annual meetings. Often, these are important statements of philosophy or accomplishment.

  • Join APHA to enjoy the full benefits of membership and start receiving Printing History. Members joining at the Contributor level are eligible for premiums.
